Ever wanted to be a fly on the wall of the Modern Familyfriend group? Allow Julie Bowen to give you a peek.
It’s been just six years since the modern classic sitcom wrapped its 11-season run on ABC, but in the nearly two decades since the show first premiered, Modern Family fans’ enthusiasm hasn’t dimmed. Neither has the cast’s affection for one another.
Modern Family is a rare example of a series that ran for an extended period of time without a single core cast member taking a hiatus or early exit. Bowen and her costars stuck around for the long haul, and now, she recently explained, they make an effort to keep in touch even while all being scattered across the globe.
“The group chat is everything, because we’re all spread out,” Bowen told PEOPLE on Sunday at the Rape Treatment Center and Stuart House Annual Brunch held at Los Angeles’ Skirball Cultural Center. “The group chat is the key.”
Bowen played the headstrong and driven matriarch, Claire, of the series’ central Dunphy family across the series run. She won two Emmys for her performance, becoming one of three of the cast’s stars to break out of nomination purgatory and actually take home a trophy (Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet are the others).
Because of the Modern Family group chat, Bowen is able to rattle Burrell’s and Stonestreet’s locations off the top of her head — Burrell, who played her hapless husband Phil, is currently in Utah, and Stonestreet, who played the excitable Cameron Tucker, is in Missouri. But coordinates aren’t the only things shared in the group chat.
“We’ll just throw things on there, things that crack us up, nice things,” Bowen shared. “We’re always chatting.”
The Modern Family set “became home,” Bowen continued. “It was 11 years. It just became the most comfortable, easy, fun place ever… And maybe I’m just forgetting if there was conflict, but I can’t think of any. It was really lovely.”

The strength of the Modern Family cast’s enduring bond is clear from the sheer amount of reunions they organize — both for official occasions like the Emmys, and for personal occasions, just because they miss each other.
Nolan Gould and Ariel Winter, who played Claire and Phil Dunphy’s children, Luke and Alex Dunphy, recently revealed that they became roommatescalling the arrangement “our own little reboot.” And last October, Burrell and Bowen reunited in Oregon at a college football game.
