INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Airport Authority expects 500,000 passengers to fly out of Indianapolis International Airport through Oct. 26.
The travel surge follows the start of fall break for local K-12 schools and universities such as Indiana University, Butler University and Purdue University Indianapolis. Megan Carrico, the airport’s senior director of public affairs, said this weekend will likely be the busiest period of the month.
“We do see October 4th being one of the biggest days with around 23,000 people traveling out of Indianapolis in that time frame.” Carrico said.
To manage the crowds, the airport is increasing staff levels. Ticket counters and TSA checkpoints are opening early, and restaurants are adjusting hours to match flight schedules.
“We’re staffing up in certain locations, supplementing staff when needed. We have airline ticket counters opening early, TSA checkpoints opening early, as well as adjusting our food and beverage schedules to align with that timeframe.” Carrico said.
Traveler Bailey Owens said her family’s trip to Orlando started without delays.
“It’s been pretty seamless so far. We got through security and everything with time enough to get lunch before we got on the plane.” Owens said.
While the airport always suggests early arrival, Carrico urged travelers to add extra time during the peak hours of 4 a.m. to 6 a.m.
“We see 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. having quite a bit of people. So, when we say get here two hours early, we definitely mean it, especially during that peak period.” Carrico said.
The airport also recently launched a TSA pilot program called “Gateside.” It allows people with TSA PreCheck to meet or see off travelers at the gate without a ticket. Carrico said only a few people have used the program so far, but she expects interest to grow.
“As it’s in its early stages, we’re only seeing a handful of people use it. But it’s a great opportunity if you’ve got a loved one flying out to stay with them through the gate before they fly out or even greet them on the way home.” Carrico said.
